Mould is not only visually unappealing and unpleasant because of its musty odour, the effects of co-existing with mould can be harmful and should not be viewed complacently.

Mould colonies are made up of microscopic living organisms which reproduce, therefore expanding the colonies and making the problem progressively worse.

The adverse effects of exposure to mould include nasal congestion, eye irritations and respiratory ailments. People who have a compromised immune system or suffer from asthma, also pregnant women and infants, have increased risk of potential adverse health effects caused through exposure to mould.

As untreated mould growth can cause significant and adverse health risks, it is important to identify the source of the contaminant and move immediately to remove the moisture, control ambient temperature and prevent further water or moisture problem that may exist within the structure.

  1. Identify the source of moisture and eliminate the contributory conditions
  2. Determine area and extent of mould growth
  3. Position dehumidifiers and air movers strategically to stabilise environment
  4. Test air quality and humidity until proper ambient temperature is reached
  5. Apply antimicrobial treatment to prevent possibility of future contamination

What to do after flooding

  1. Remove excess water by mopping and blotting
  2. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of table items
  3. Remove and prop up wet upholstery and cushions
  4. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpets
  5. Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying
  6. Remove colored rugs from wet carpet
  7. Remove art objects to a safe place
  8. Gather loose items from floor
  9. Keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging
  10. Hang furs and leather goods in ventilated area

What not to do after flooding

  1. Don’t leave wet fabrics in place
  2. Don’t leave books, magazines or other coloured items on wet carpet
  3. Don’t use house hold vacuum to remove water
  4. Don’t use any electrical appliance unless safe
  5. Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet
